Entrust Datacard President and CEO Testifies Before U.S. Senate Committee
MINNEAPOLIS—(Nov. 8, 2017)—Entrust Datacard, a leading provider of trusted identity and secure transaction technology solutions, announced that president and CEO, Todd Wilkinson, today testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Mr. Wilkinson spoke during a hearing titled Protecting Consumers in an Era of Major Data Breaches.
The hearing, which was convened by U.S. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, was to examine recent data breach events, identify steps that could have been taken to better ensure the safety of consumer data and to determine if there are options to further safeguard consumer personally identifiable information in the future. In addition to the testimony by Mr. Wilkinson, the hearing included testimony from Yahoo! in response to their 2013 data breach, as well as Equifax, which suffered a 2017 breach reported to affect approximately 145 million individuals.
“We live in an incredibly connected and complex world. The challenge of protecting data is an evolving and sophisticated task, but it all starts with a secure identity,” said Todd Wilkinson, president and CEO of Entrust Datacard. “This will only become more critical as we continue to drive toward greater connectivity, linking virtually every aspect of our lives to a connected system.”
During his testimony, Wilkinson urged the committee to consider leveraging available technologies to provide the nation’s citizens with new mechanisms to protect their identity. Mr. Wilkinson recommended that the government create a new identity framework that would create a modern secure identity through a collaboration between government and industry. The secure modern identity could minimize risk and inconvenience to consumers in instances of breach and allow a consumer to more easily recover their identity with minimal impact.
